In the first big move of the tradeseason, Portland acquired Marcus Camby from the Los Angelos Clippers for Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw.  This was a great move for the Trailblazers.  They have had a huge hole vacated by injuries to Joel Pryzbilla and Greg Oden.  Juwon Howard has filled in very well and Camby gives them the second best rebounder in the game inside.  Losing Blake will hurt some, but not as much as they gain from Camby.  Andre Miller has played very well at point guard and youngser Bayliss has shown he can be an effective backup.  They won't miss Outlaw.  He has been out since November with a broken foot and is to return soon.  Portland holds the 8th sot in the playoffs.  Camby is in his last year of his contract and will likely leave after this season since Oden and Pryzbilla will be back.

Allen Iverson’s sometime glittering career in the NBA could just be over after he left the Memphis Grizzlies early into his tenure with the franchise.

Although Iverson was given permission ‘to leave to attend to personal business’ late last week, his time in Memphis had already started to become a sideshow with more talk about him being asked to come off the bench than anything else.

In the NBA these days, it seems like there is a stat for everything. We’ve got PER, offensive efficiency ratings, defensive efficiency rating, and so on and so on.

It seems like every team in the league now employs their own stat guru. And while I’m not one to question the use of all these new statistics to evaluate NBA players (I actually kinda like them), I’m old school.

Quentin Richardson has traveled from New York to Memphis to Los Angelos, and now to Minnesota.  He takes with him $9mil for one year.  Last season he earned 3 wins for the New York Knicks (a Howard Sports statistic).  In return, the Clippers get Sebastian Telfair (3 wins), Craig Smith (2 wins), and Mark Madsen (0 wins). So, it was a good trade for the Clippers.  They gained a backup to Baron Davis.  Minnesota meanwhile gets to unload a huge salary after this season.  Richardson also fills a void that was created when Foye was traded to Washington.  Also, Ricky Rubio doesn't appear to coming soon.  After the terrific play of Flynn this summer in Las Vegas, Telfair became expendable.

The Los Angelos Clippers sent Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for Quentin Richardson.  A move that was needed after having a surplus of inside talent with newly drafted Blake Griffin.  Griffin has been sensastional in summer league and will likely start for the Clippers.  Using the Howard Sports winning system, Randolph earned 2 wins while Richardson earned 3.  So, it's a pretty even swap.  The Grizzlies acquired Richardson from the Knicks for Darko Milicic this summer.  So, Richardson never played a game for Memphis.

The Clippers had a horrible year.  They were suppose to be more than just a playoff contender.  Fred Jones is a free agent and Ricky Davis has a players option.  I doubt he will leave.  The Clippers have the first overall pick and will take Blake Griffin.  A trade could happen and if it does it's likely to involve either Camby, Randolph, or Kaman who all have close to or over 10million on their contracts.

The Clippers season last year, mediocre at best, wasn't a complete waste. With the addition of big men Marcus Camby and Zach Randolph, I think the Clippers have a great chance of clinching a playoff birth next season. They also acquired Eric Gordon via draft and as everyone probably already knows, Baron Davis as a Free agent.  Personally i don't think they did good last season because they were plagued with injuries. Now let's talk about next season! I'm pretty hopeful about the 09/10 season mainly because most likely the Clippers will get a top 3 draft pick. It would be great if they could get a power-house player like Blake Griffin, but they already have so many big men it would kind of be a wasted pick. The Clippers need someone who's fast and can handle the ball. I think Ricky Rubio fits their needs perfectly. Can't wait for may 19th!!!!(Draft Day!)

Happily my Tarot cards were right on when they predicted last night's win. With the Clips holding a 10-33 record before the game there really wasn't much doubt. But wait! What is going on with the first halves of the last couple of games? Why did we enter halftime with such a small lead? And as much as Blake obviously wants to play, why on earth don't they keep him out until we get to a game against, say, Utah on the 31st when we'll really need him? We haven't beaten Utah yet this season and we need to, so why take the chance that someone as important as Blake won't be ready? Lots of questions in mind tonight that I don't know the answers to! Another that comes to mind about Mike Dunleavy (and I really like him so I'm not trying to be a jerk with this one) is wondering when he'll pop a bloodvessel on the court! Poor guy spent the whole night almost beet red and looking like an anyurism waiting to happen. Wasn't surprised when he got a technical. Happened often enough when he was our coach. Great to see Roy's free throws are solidly back on track and loved Outlaw's fourth quarter. He can be such a dynamic player and has some real star potential of his own. Can't wait until the media outside of Portland starts to recognize it too! Glad Fernandez redeemed himself as well. His three's are a thing of beauty! Hopefully he'll start driving to the basket more often again with that Jordanesque style we were seeing at the beginning of the season. Sometimes it seems like Fernandez and Rodriguez have their own kind of ESP going on with passes that turn into sheer poetry of motion. I

I admit-- I started rooting for the Clippers back in the 80s because I felt sorry for them. C'mon, I know I am not the only one....some of you felt sorry for the rag-tag bunch who showed up from San Diego to play in that ancient LA Sports Arena, hoping to leverage off of the successful Lakers franchise. Sure, we knew that Sterling was a cheap jerk, but hey, our very own Bill Walton used to play for them, he of UCLA fame and that improbable Blazers championship, and well, Norm Nixon was a favorite of mine when he was on the Lakers. Forget the fact that after the Lakers got rid of him that the Lakers got better, you still had to feel for the guys in those vintage 60s design unis that lost all of the time...

Tonight, the Mavs will play their 7th and last home game in a row against the Denver Nuggets. The Mavs have been playing strong 5-1 so far in this homestand beating the Clippers, Suns, Hawks, Bobcats, and Thunder. Their only loss came against the San Antonis Spurs in a double overtime game. Despite the 5-1 run, they're still 1.5 games behind the Southwest leader, the same amount of games before they started this home stretch. And, they are still 4th in the division. Last night, the Mavs trailed the entire game until the final seconds to beat the Clippers. This is obviously far from an impressive outing. We're talking about the Clippers here. The Mavs enter the month of December with a mediocre 8-8 record.

Just when things were looking like it would turn around with a 5-game win streak, they met a brick wall in the Los Angeles Lakers. Sure, the Lakers are easily the best team in the league today. But, if the Mavs had won that game, they would have had a winning record for the first time since October. After finishing November and their California trip with a win over the Sacramento Kings, the Mavs go home with a .500 winning percentage.

                      * The Philadelphia 76ers take home court tonight against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Wachovia Centre, which will be a reunion of sorts for Elton Brand and the boys from the west shore. Tonight will also provide the chance for Brand to square off against his friend Baron Davis. The Sixers are comming off one of their worst performances of the season against the TimberWolves, and it will be important for them to get off to a good start tonight to erase any of that bad taste from their mouths. The Clippers are a team in flux, as they traded Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley to the Knicks in return for Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins. The Sixers need to win tonight because they are the better team on paper; they need to prove to themselves that they can, and should, win these games against lesser opponents. Here are a few keys for tonight:

I hope Mark Cuban was watching when Germany handled Angola, 95-66.

Dirk showed when he was at his best. No, not against extremely sub-par talent (true as that may be), but when he has a big man who can score inside on his team. Dirk was allowed to roam around the perimeter, and drive without drawing double teams.

The Clippers just replaced Elton Brand. Well, sort of.

The Nuggets basically just gave the defensive ace to the Clips. The only thing Denver received in return is the option to swap second round picks in 2010. This was a cut and dry salary dump from the Nuggets, who have 5 other players at 10 million or more for next season. The problem will be the team's defense. The only thing that kept the Nuggets from being great was a lack of defensive play. Camby was just about the only player committed to defense every night. Who will stop teams from dropping 120 on the Nuggets now?

Bringing Marcus Camby into the fold, and to a lesser extent letting Corey Maggette walk, catapults the Clippers into the upper echelon of the best defensive squads in the league. A frontline of Camby and Kaman is not only large, but also block happy. Remember, Camby is only two years removed from his Defensive Player of the year award, and, statistically, actually had a better season last year.

On the heels of the poor Clippers being spurned by Elton Brand (more on that in the coming days) in hilarious fashing, the Lakers seem to have been hit just as hard. Word on the proverbial street (or more likely, on the off ramp of the information super highway) is that Ronny Turiaf has agreed, tentatively to play for the Golden State Warriors for $17 million over 4 years ( http://www.pe.com/sports/basketball/breakout/stories/PE_Sports_Local_S_turiaf_09.47b3657.html). What do I think about this, you ask? Good question, you. I get the same feeling that I got when Golden State signed Derek Fisher for $37 million over 6 years, and that is that Golden State has NO idea how to properly run a team. I loved Ronny on the Lakers. I loved making jokes with my friend about Phil Jackson yelling at Ronny at practice claiming that he “has no heart”, along with 4 billion other heart related comments (for those of you who don’t know, Ronny was diagnosed with an enlarged aortic root and required open heart surgery at the beginning of the 2005 NBA season). It does bother me slightly, that the Lakers had a chance to dump Ronny over this heart condition but chose to stick with it, pay his salary AND cover the expenses for his surgery, and he goes his own way once he is a restricted free agent. I know he must look out for himself, but it always bothers me with loyalty is thrown by the wayside.

While I promised, and will deliver, my 2008 NBA Draft Losers today, I had to first stop and comment on Baron Davis to the Clippers.

I love the move! Not only am I a big Baron Davis fan, but I am also a big Elton Brand fan. Given the opportunity for Brand to have a couple of running mates, his professionalism, leadership and post-game could easily bring a title to LA. Not yet, but Davis, Chris Kaman, Cat Mobley and Brand is a decent start. Al Thorton could be the future at the Small Forward position, and maybe #1 draft pick Eric Gordon is the man to take this team over the top at the 2.

In this brand-spankin’-new feature, I offer a few thoughts after taking in the game at Dodger Stadium.

  1.   Hand dryers. After the Dodgers’ disappointing performance on the field, I wanted to wash my hands of the team once and for all. Well, maybe just once. And imagine my astonishment when the Dodger Stadium now allows me an ingenious way to dry my hands of them too! Yes, bathrooms (at least on the field level) now include a new hand-dryer thingy. But it’s much much better than the regular hand dryers, which merely blow humid air onto one’s hands. These new-fangled devices included a cavity into which one puts one’s hands, upon which they are blasted with quick jets of cool air which successfully blow the water droplets off one’s hands. Brilliant. This may have been the highlight of my trip to Dodger Stadium. No joke.

The National Basketball Association exhibits two kinds of NBA players.  One is the wildebeast. The other is the lion.  What do you mean?

I mean that there are players in the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trailblazers, Los Angeles Clippers, Seattle Sonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, and I apologize if I left anyone out, who cow towe to team owners, peer groups, and making money, glitz, glamor, being effeminate, etc.  There are also professional basketball players who cow towe to their concept of self.  They always go to their strength.  Their strength resides in their hearts and minds. They believe in who they are because they know who they are.  Money, team owners, peer groups, glitz, glamor, being effeminate, etc. are particles of dust when juxtaposing them to their desire to perform to their greatest abilities as a professional basketball player.
